On March 4, Delhi Finance Minister Atishi Marlena presented a visionary budget of ₹76,000 crore for the financial year 2024-25, anchored on the theme of "Ram Rajya." Central to this budget is the introduction of the groundbreaking 'Mahila Samman Yojana,' a welfare scheme designed to empower women across Delhi.

Under the 'Mahila Samman Yojana,' every woman above 18 years of age in Delhi will receive ₹1,000 per month, with a substantial budget allocation of ₹2,000 crore for the fiscal year 2024-25. This initiative, scheduled to be rolled out post the Lok Sabha 2024 elections, aims to uplift and support the socioeconomic status of women in the region.

In an exclusive interview with LiveMint, Atishi elaborated on the scheme's implementation timeline, stating that the first installment of funds is anticipated to be disbursed by October following the necessary administrative procedures. Eligibility criteria for the scheme include being a registered voter in Delhi, not availing benefits from other government schemes, and not being an income taxpayer.

Addressing queries regarding the financial sustainability of the ambitious scheme, Atishi highlighted the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) robust financial management track record over the years. Despite minimal financial support from the central government, Delhi has successfully provided essential services such as free electricity, water, bus rides for women, high-quality education, and healthcare, maintaining a fiscal surplus.

Atishi emphasized the government's efficiency in revenue generation and prudent fiscal planning, attributing the fiscal surplus to effective governance under the leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, an IIT graduate. She reiterated the government's commitment to fiscal responsibility and assured that all necessary calculations have been made to sustainably finance the 'Mahila Samman Yojana' and other welfare initiatives.

The introduction of the 'Mahila Samman Yojana' underscores the Delhi government's unwavering dedication to women's empowerment and social welfare, reflecting a progressive and inclusive approach towards governance.
